Nigeria’s Women’s Premier League champions, Edo Queens, delivered a sensational comeback on Saturday night to defeat defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in their final Group B match at the ongoing CAF Women’s Champions League. The dramatic victory secured their spot in the semifinals of the tournament.

Edo Queens, who topped Group B, will now face Tanzania’s TP Mazembe in the semifinal clash on Tuesday.

The match seemed destined for heartbreak for Edo Queens, as Mamelodi Sundowns led 1-0 deep into stoppage time, courtesy of M. Kgatiete’s 24th-minute goal. However, Emem Essien’s equalizer in the 95th minute reignited the Nigerians’ hopes. Just five minutes later, Mary Mamudu sealed the victory with a stunning strike, ensuring the defending champions’ exit and propelling Edo Queens into the next stage.

The Nigerians had started their campaign with a commanding 3-0 win over Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, with goals from Emem Essien, Folashade Ijamilusi, and Goodness Osigwe. Their second group match ended in a goalless draw against Egypt’s Masar FC before their thrilling win over Mamelodi Sundowns in the final group game.

This remarkable performance underscores Edo Queens’ determination and resilience as they continue their quest for continental glory in Morocco.
