Calm restored at Unilag after protests over female undergraduate’s death

Normalcy has been restored at the University of Lagos, Akoka Campus, following protests that rocked the institution, Wednesday, over the electrocution of a female undergraduate student, Oluchi Aneke, Tuesday.

Although, the Senate of the University of Lagos could not confirm if academic activities at the school were shut over the protests, it was gathered that buses had been made available to convey interested students to commiserate with the family of the late student.

This is as academic activities at the various faculties of the institution are said to have resumed as at the time of this report.

Students had barricaded the entrance to the school premises, as they expressed their grievances over the circumstances surrounding the death of their colleague, Miss Anekwe, who was electrocuted, Tuesday night, in front of the New Hall of residence in the institution.

The deceased, a female student was killed by high tension cable in front of the Sodeinde Hall of residence on the campus.

It was gathered that she was walking along the New Hall bus stop when a high voltage cable reportedly cut off from the electric pole and landed on her.

The student was immediately rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), but gave up before the ambulance conveying her could reach the hospital.

Although firefighters were called to the scene, they soon left after removing the victim from the scene, leaving the entire area without cordoning it off or placing caution tapes around it.

The late Anekwe was a 300 level student of the Department of Accounting at the University and was a First Class scholar in her department until her death.

She hailed from Aku town in Igbo Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State.
