Gratitude as a sign of humility By Fr. Peter Iwuala

Gratitude is more than a polite acknowledgment of generosity—it is a true indicator of humility. The way we give thanks, or fail to do so, often reflects the attitudes dwelling in our hearts.

Consider the difference between something we earn and something we are given. When we pay for an item or receive a service for which we have rendered compensation, we see it as our due. It is a transaction, and no gratitude is required. But when a gift is extended to us—whether material, spiritual, or simply an act of kindness—the fitting response is gratitude. Unlike a purchased good, a gift speaks of generosity, not obligation.

This distinction reveals something about our interior life. A person who is quick to express gratitude recognizes that they are not the center of the universe, that they depend on others, and that many of life’s blessings are not earned but bestowed. Gratitude acknowledges that we are receivers as much as we are givers. It reminds us that we are not self-sufficient, but part of a greater web of relationships and graces.

On the other hand, when gratitude is absent, pride often lurks in the background. An ungrateful spirit misses the reality that much of what we have is, in fact, gift—our lives, our talents, the support of others. If we catch ourselves neglecting to give thanks, it may be a signal that we must grow in humility. True humility opens the heart to marvel at what has been given and to respond with sincere appreciation.

Cultivating gratitude, then, is not merely about social courtesy. It is about shaping the soul toward humility. By developing the habit of recognizing and naming the gifts we receive each day, we train ourselves to see reality more clearly—that we are dependent, cherished, and blessed. Gratitude, in this sense, is both a practice and a virtue: it is the expression of humility and the pathway to deeper joy.
