Nigeria’s Rivers United began their CAF Confederation Cup campaign with a goalless draw against Aigles du Congo in the first leg of their preliminary round tie on Saturday.
The Pride of Rivers travelled to Congo with high expectations and returned with an important away result that keeps their qualification hopes alive.
Despite creating several chances, the Nigerian side could not break down a disciplined Aigles du Congo defence. The hosts also came close before the break, but Rivers United’s backline stayed solid to keep the game level.
In the second half, Rivers United pushed harder for an away goal, but the Congolese goalkeeper and defenders stood firm. After ninety minutes of competitive football, both teams shared the spoils.
The tie now shifts to Uyo next weekend, where Rivers United must make home advantage count. A win will guarantee progress, but a score draw would see them eliminated under CAF’s away goal rule.
Quarter-finalists in 2023, Rivers United are eager to make another deep run in this year’s competition. Backed by their fans in Uyo, they will be looking to seal qualification in the return leg.
