American Gospel Music legend Ron Kenoly dies at 81
Renowned American gospel singer, worship leader and pastor Ron Kenoly has died at the age of 81.
His death was confirmed on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, and has sparked tributes from gospel musicians, pastors and worshippers across the world.
Kenoly was widely known for his powerful live worship recordings and his major influence on contemporary praise and worship music. His songs were sung in churches across Africa, Europe, Asia and the Americas, making him one of the most recognised voices in modern Christian worship.
Born on December 6, 1944, in Coffeyville, Kansas, Kenoly rose to global fame in the early 1990s. His 1992 album Lift Him Up With Ron Kenoly marked a turning point in praise music and helped shape a new style of energetic, congregational worship. Songs such as Ancient of Days, Jesus Is Alive and We’re Going Up became popular worship anthems worldwide.
During his long career, Kenoly released more than 20 albums, including God Is Able, Sing Out With One Voice and Welcome Home. His vibrant worship style, backed by large choirs, inspired generations of worship leaders and musicians.
Beyond music, Kenoly served as a pastor and worship leader at Jubilee Christian Center in San Jose, California. He also travelled widely, leading worship conferences, seminars and church events, where he mentored worship teams and led large praise gatherings.
Following news of his death, many gospel artists and church leaders paid tribute to his impact on their faith and ministry. Nigerian gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey and other worship leaders described Kenoly as a major influence on their lives and music.
The cause of death has not been made public. Details of his burial and memorial services are expected to be announced later.
