Chelsea fined £10.75m, hit with transfer bans over historical rule breaches

Chelsea F.C. have been fined £10.75 million ($14.27 million) and handed a suspended one-year transfer ban after being found guilty of historical breaches of Premier League regulations.

The league confirmed on Monday that the London club will also face an immediate nine-month ban from registering academy players.

According to the Premier League, the sanctions are linked to information submitted by the ownership group led by Todd Boehly after their takeover of the club from former owner Roman Abramovich in 2022.

Investigations revealed that between 2011 and 2018, third parties connected to Chelsea made undisclosed payments to players, unregistered agents and other individuals.

However, league officials stated that even if those payments had been properly declared in previous financial records, the club would still not have breached the league’s profitability and sustainability rules.

The Premier League also noted that Chelsea’s decision to self-report the issues, admit the breaches and cooperate fully with investigators helped reduce the severity of the sanctions.

In addition, Chelsea have been charged by the Football Association with 74 alleged breaches of its rules, also connected to information provided by the club’s current owners.
