Rights lawyer backs Trump’s threat over insecurity in Nigeria
Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has supported the warning issued by United States President Donald Trump over the continued killing of Christians in Nigeria.
Trump had threatened that the U.S. military would take action if the Nigerian government failed to protect its Christian population. Following his remarks, U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth reportedly said preparations were underway for possible action should the attacks continue.
Reacting in a post on X, Effiong said the security situation in Nigeria had worsened for too long and described the response of the Nigerian authorities as weak.
He said, “If this is what it will take for the Nigerian government to wake up to its primary responsibility, so be it. The idea that our Armed Forces are so weak and ineffective is unacceptable to me.”
Effiong accused the military of failing to address repeated claims that some officers were aiding insurgents.
“Communities have been accusing Nigeria’s military of shielding the terrorists. We have seen too many videos of communities and victims openly confronting the military for allegedly working with insurgents. We have not seen any serious effort to get to the root of these allegations,” he said.
The lawyer added that the government must take decisive steps to end the violence, warning that Nigerians “cannot continue like this.”
“Enough is enough,” he concluded.
