Over 30 die in Sokoto boat tragedy

No fewer than 29 persons were confirmed dead by locals in Shagari local government area of Sokoto State after a boat conveying passengers capsized in transit in the dam.

The passengers were said to be heading from Gidan Magana to Mangara village before the unfortunate incident.

A very reliable source from Shagari local government who spoke with our correspondent decried said that the casualty figures could be more as search and rescue was still ongoing as at press time.

According to the source, the incident happened on Tuesday. Continuing, he said the corpses so far recovered included those of five males and 24 females.

Meanwhile, the former governor of Sokoto State and Senator repressing Sokoto north, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko has extended his condolences to the bereaved families and the entire people of Shagari local government over the unfortunate incident.

Senator Wamakko in a statement by his spokesperson, Hassan Sahabi Sanyinnawal prayed Allah to grant the deceased Aljannat Firdaus, as well as give their families the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable losses.

At the time of filing this report, search for other casualties of the capsized boat was still ongoing while all the corpses recovered were buried according to Islamic rites.
