Akwa Ibom State Police Command on Thursday paraded a 25 year old man for allegedly killing his father over quarrel with his mother.
The suspect, Mr. Mfreke Archibong who hails from Ikot Udo Nkan in Ibesikpo Local Government Area of the state, was said to have hit his aged father, Mr. Aniefiok Archibong with a log of wood.
Commissioner of Police, Mr. Murtala Mani, while speaking to newsmen at the police headquarters in Uyo said, the accused on Monday February 8, killed the father over a quarrel with the mother, when he (Mfreke) was returning home from work and met both parents in a war of words.
He said in the heat of the argument the accused, Mr. Mfreke Archibong used the log of wood that was immediately available to hit the father, who later died in the hospital.
“This young man murdered his father by using a log of wood to hit his head. He would soon be charged to court after all investigations are concluded,” the Commissioner said.
The suspect, who admitted, during self confession, to committing the crime said, he came back from work to meet his parents quarreling and when he asked to know what happened, his father, over hearing him from the room came out and threw a bottle at him, and he used a log of wood to club him.
“My name is Mfreke Aniefiok Achibong. I come from Ikot Udo Nkan in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area. My mother and father have been having issues. My father has not been feeding me; I cut palm fruits to feed myself.
“On Monday at about 6pm, I returned from where I went to meet my parents quarreling.
“I enquired from my mother what happened and while she tried to tell me, my father who overheard me from the room came out to pelt me with a bottle and stick. I was annoyed and I took the same stick and hit him back; he slumped and the next thing I heard was that he is dead.”
In another development, the Command has also unveiled the new Police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in the state.
The police boss, who spoke during the unveiling ceremony at the police headquarters, Ikot Akpanabia said, the re-branding of SARS was in line with the Police Inspector General (IGP), Mr. Solomon Arase’s initiative to reposition the force for effective performance.
SARS operatives in the state, according to him have recorded great feats in curbing kidnapping and armed robbery activities noting that, some of the achievements beat human imagination.
He charged them to be committed to their duty and not allow criminal elements to subdue them.
“I appreciate all of you, make sure criminals don’t have a hiding place in the state. Double your efforts to achieve zero tolerance to crime”, Mr. Mani charged.
While commending five of the policemen from his command, who were presented with certificates of Courage for gallantry and outstanding performance, he urged them to see the certificates as motivation to do more for the command in combating crime in the state.
Cpl. Effanga Okon, who responded on behalf of other awardees promised to double their efforts to rid the state of criminals adding, “I am elated and will put in my best in the service.”
