God answers the prayer of the despondent By Fr. Peter Iwuala

August 27 and 28 are the Feast Days of  St. Monica and St. Augustine respectively.
In every generation, parents carry the weight of deep concern for their children. For some, the burden can become overwhelming—whether it be a child entangled in destructive choices, a strained relationship, or simply uncertainty about the future. It is often in such moments of despair that faith is put to the test. Yet, history and tradition remind us that God hears the prayers of the despondent and answers in ways that transcend our timelines and expectations.
For troubled and weary parents, it is easy to grow restless and look for quick fixes—sometimes even turning to voices that promise instant miracles with loud declarations or material guarantees. Sadly, this “fire and brimstone” approach, driven by money and showmanship, often leaves the faithful disappointed and spiritually empty. True prayer, however, is not an exchange of goods but a steadfast communion with God, rooted in humility, patience, and unwavering faith.
The story of St. Monica exemplifies this truth in a powerful way. Monica, the mother of St. Augustine, was deeply distressed by her son’s immoral lifestyle and rejection of Christianity. For over thirty years, she prayed with tears, fasting, and consistent reliance on God, never ceasing to intercede on her son’s behalf. She begged not only in her own prayers but sought the prayers of priests and fellow believers, trusting that God could transform her son’s heart.
Her perseverance bore fruit. In the year 387, Augustine was baptized and gave his life fully to Christ, later becoming one of the most influential theologians and saints in the history of the Church. Monica died the following year, but not before witnessing the fulfillment of her decades-long prayer. Her story teaches us that delayed answers are not denied answers—God may act in His own time, but He acts out of love.
For today’s despondent parent, there is hope. While you may not see immediate change, your prayers are never wasted. Every plea whispered to God, every tear shed in faith, becomes part of an unseen movement of grace. God’s timing and methods may differ from our expectations, but His faithfulness never wavers.
Therefore, do not lose heart. Like Monica, continue in prayer. Resist the temptation to be swayed by empty promises of quick solutions. Trust instead in the quiet yet powerful hand of God, who alone can heal, restore, and bring new life. Your labor in prayer is not in vain—the God who answered Monica still answers today.
