Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, Sunday urged Christians to embark on fervent prayers to arrest the upsurge in kidnapping and other forms of criminality in the country.
He spoke at a church service to mark the 2016 mothering Sunday at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, Federal Housing, Trans-Ekulu, Enugu.
He commended Monsignor Prof. Obiora Ike, a Catholic priest and chairman of the Enugu State Economic Advisory Committee who also went for his 60th birthday thanksgiving service, for his selfless service to the state and humanity in general.
The governor explained that the prayers of the church had become necessary in view of the increasing incidence of crimes and other anti-social activities in different parts of the country.
He frowned at the menace of the herdsmen, cases of rape, armed robbery, kidnapping, pipeline vandalism among others.
The governor equally regretted that economic hardship is bogging down governance and that the said cases of criminality have continued to worsen the situation.
He enjoined mothers to be the vanguard of peace, love and tolerance in their various families for peace to reign and to make the society a better place for all.
Earlier in a sermon, Prof. Obiora Ike explained that the day is a demonstration of God’s love for mankind, adding that mothers should play their roles effectively in their various families.
He commended Governor Ugwuanyi and Senator Jim Nwobodo who were in the church service for finding time despite their busy schedules to honour his invitation. He urged the nation’s leaders to imbibe the culture of leaving good legacies while in office.
A visiting priest, Monsignor Anthony Anijielo, also commended Governor Ugwuanyi for his human-oriented projects in the state put in place to better the standard of living of the people, urging him not to relent.
