The Federal Government of Nigeria has fulfilled its promise to reward members of the Nigeria women’s national basketball team after their historic victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.

The players were presented with house documents and national honours in Lyon by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, alongside the Commission’s Director-General, Bukola Olopade.

The presentation fulfils the pledge made by the government to appreciate the team after they successfully defended their African title in the tournament organised by International Basketball Federation.

D’Tigress have continued to dominate women’s basketball in Africa in recent years. Their success at the 2025 championship extended Nigeria’s strong record in the competition and confirmed the country’s position as one of the leading teams in African women’s basketball.

Officials of the National Sports Commission said the reward shows the government’s commitment to recognising athletes who bring honour to the country through outstanding performances on the international stage.

The ceremony in France was attended by members of the Nigerian delegation, as well as players and officials of the team, who received the documents on behalf of the squad.

Under the guidance of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, D’Tigress have regularly produced impressive results in continental and international tournaments, including appearances at the Olympic Games and the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.

Their continued success in Africa has also strengthened Nigeria’s reputation in women’s basketball, with the team widely praised for inspiring many young female athletes across the country.

More details about the individual beneficiaries and the specific national honours awarded are expected to be announced by the NSC.
