The Origin: Newark’s colorful gateway to beauty of African cuisine

By Isiah Christie
If there’s one thing Newark, New Jersey can never be denied of, it’s the diversity surging through its city streets that result in a flavorful bout of magic that feeds its residents. With an ethnic makeup of nearly half-African-American or black residents – sitting at a 46.67% population percentage, in fact – it is natural that the makings of African-American citizens in the city reflect in its various establishments.
This includes a noteworthy presence of African restaurants and lounges that bring the beauty of the continent’s dishes into an American landscape. The essence of African dishes is largely misunderstood, but sprinkling some exposure and accessibility among this country’s populace is enough to render it loved and desired – and The Origin Restaurant & Lounge, located just outside the rapidly-growing South Ironbound, represents that principle immaculately.
Going on three years of activity, The Origin launched out in April of 2022 with a grand opening that put

its foot into the Newark culinary ecosystem. Nearly half a decade later, it stands strong with a remarkable dedication not only to quality, but to the building of community. “Our commitment goes beyond food,” The Origin team says as part of their mission statement.
The strength of the establishment is that it is not only centered around food, but also the natural fun and unwinding that comes with a lounge – open until 2:00 A.M. (3:00 A.M. on Fridays and Saturdays), it is perfect for a crowd that wants to enjoy the electrifying feelings parallel to great DJ work that includes hip-hop and afrobeats hits.
The cuisine itself is also incredible by design, with a vast menu baked in flavor and authenticity. Among its best and highest acclaimed dishes are its jollof rice – which is considered their signature dish – Ethiopian injera, and array of meat dishes. These include fish – most notably their well-flavored croaker, chicken, turkey, and a few select stews, including beef and goat stew. Also present are several iconic African dishes, including abacha, ugba, nkwobi (cow feet soup), and Nigerian isi ewu.
All of these dishes are also notable catering options, a service The Origin advertises with pride. “Our professional team is committed to providing a seamless experience, whether you’re organizing a corporate luncheon or a grand wedding reception,” they explain. This is yet another strength of the restaurant – it is not only an in-house experience, but aims to be a permanent connection outside of the eating room as well.
The dual restaurant-lounge has continued to grow its image and reputation in Newark’s complex web of eating options, something the African residents of the city can thoroughly appreciate. It is important to understand that the roots of The Origin and other ethnic restaurants are not only a gateway to flavor, but to understand the long, historic beauty of African tradition – and with a fun environment mixed into the experience, it’s amazing to have them as part of Newark lifestyle.
