Bayelsa guber re-run in Southern Ijaw: 10 killed, scores injured

Tension has gripped some parts of Bayelsa community following the killing of over 10 youths by suspected political thugs and gunmen during the Southern Ijaw governorship re run poll characterized by serious electoral violence.

The killing, sources said, was carried out in Nembe Bassambiri community, off the coastal area of the state.

Also scores of youths and party supporters from both parties were injured by hired political thugs.

The victims, our correspondent gathered, were feared killed in Nembe, Famgbe and Ekeremor communities during the heated re run.

Security agents were deployed to communities in Southern Ijaw to check violence including other units and wards where elections were holding.

Our correspondent who monitor the poll at Anyama and Amasoma communities in Southern Ijaw gathered that fake Independent National Election Commission INEC electoral observers were arrested by a team of security personnel at Famgbe community in Yenagoa local government Area.

The southern Ijaw supplementary election accreditation and voting started simultaneously in all the units and wards as voting commenced at 8am and ended by 2pm.

No political party has claimed responsibility for the killings, electoral violence and attacks on political supporters.

At Amasoma, electoral materials could not get to some riverine communities following the hiccups experienced by officials of INEC in conveying materials to the areas as at 12pm

The supplementary election also witnessed a large turn out in some areas such as Anyama and Amasoma as voters came out in their numbers to cast their votes.

Similarly, residents of the state defied police order on restriction of movement, vehicular activities and personnel movement as traders were seem buying and selling their wares in Swali markets located in the heart of the city.

Tricyclists were busy making brisk business as they were conveying persons and goods from one location to another, while police were deployed to strategic places to ward off possible electoral violence.
