Peter Obi criticises Tinubu over power supply comment in Jos

African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain and 2027 presidential hopeful, Mr. Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu over his recent remarks on electricity supply during a visit to Jos, Plateau State.

In a statement shared on social media on Saturday, April 4, 2026, Obi recalled a promise made by Tinubu during the 2023 campaign. “If I don’t give you constant electricity in four years, don’t vote for me for a second term,” Obi quoted the President as having said at the time.

Obi stated that Nigeria’s power situation has not improved since Tinubu took office. According to him, the country had over 4,000 megawatts of electricity supply in 2023 with lower tariffs, but now produces less than 4,000 megawatts on average while Nigerians pay higher tariffs.

He added that Nigeria has one of the lowest levels of electricity consumption globally, noting that the country’s rate is below 30 percent of the African average.

Obi also referred to Tinubu’s recent visit to Jos, where the President stopped briefly while on his way to visit families affected by a terror attack on Palm Sunday. During the stop, Tinubu reportedly said, “You have no light here. I fly out in ten minutes.”

Obi described the comment as troubling, especially at a time when many Nigerians experience long hours without electricity. He said leaders should show more understanding of the people’s situation.

“Now is the time to stop incompetent leaders—those lacking the capacity and compassion—who prioritise their own comfort over the well-being of the people and make empty promises,” Obi said.
