The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of two players of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) by gunmen on Benin-Akure Expressway on Sunday evening.

The players are Dayo Ojo of Enyimba FC and Iluyomade Benjamin of Abia Comets FC.

This is as the management of Plateau United FC of Jos has condoled with Enugu Rangers over the demise of its Player, Ifeanyi George.
A condolence message by Albert Dakup, the Media Officer of Plateau United, issued on Sunday in Jos conveyed the message to Rangers.

The Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Tee-Leo Ikoro, who confirmed the abduction of the players to newsmen in Akure, said the Police were already on the trail of the hoodlums.

Ikoro said one of the players, who managed to escape, has been rescued by officers of the State Police Command.

“We have been able to rescue one of the players and our men are already in the bush after the kidnappers.

“I will get the details of the incident as soon as I get the information from the Divisional Police Officer of Ipele Owo,” the PPRO said.

NAN gathered that the two abducted players were on their way to their base in Akure from Owerri, after a holiday was declared for virtually all NPFL players following the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic in the country.

The duo, who were former players of the Sunshine Stars FC of Akure, were kidnapped at Ipele town on the Benin-Akure Expressway in Owo Local Government Area of the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Rangers’ player, George, died in a ghastly motor accident in the early hours of Sunday on the Benin-Lagos road.
Dakup described the death of George as “shocking”.
“The management, technical crew, players and the teeming fans of Plateau United deeply sympathise with Enugu Rangers over the death of Ifeanyi George in the ghastly accident.
“George’s untimely death is shocking and devastating, coming barely two weeks after the death of Chineme Martins of Nasarawa United of Lafia.
“We urge the management of Enugu Rangers  to accept his death  as an act of God and necessary end for all mortals,” he urged.
Dakup also condoled with the Nigeria Football  Federation (NFF) and the League Management Company (LMC) over the death of the promising striker.
