The Federal University of Lokoja (FUL), Kogi State, will confer an Honorary Doctor of Science, D.Sc. (Honoris Causa) on Senator Chris Iheanyichukwu Adighije at the institution’s 9th Convocation Ceremony which starts today, Monday, October 13 and ends on Saturday, October 18, 2025.

The Convocation Ceremony will take place at the Felele Campus of the University, and has several programmes outlined to take place on each day of the elaborate ceremony.

A letter notifying the former Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District of Abia State in the National Assembly (2003 to 2007), of the decision to honour him, was endorsed by the University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi.

The letter said the decision, approved by the Governing Council of the institution, was taken in recognition of Senator Adighije’s “exemplary leadership and profound contributions” to the University and to nation-building.

While extending warm greetings from the Governing Council, Senate, Management, Staff, and Students of the University to Senator Adighije, the Vice Chancellor noted that the institution would “count it a great honour and privilege” to have him as a Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) of the University.

He also said that they are confident that the recognition will not only celebrate Dr. Adighije’s towering achievements but would also inspire their students and the wider society “to uphold the values of integrity, service, and godly excellence” that he exemplifies.

Senator Adighije, a former Pro-Chancellor of the University, obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) Degree in Geology from the University of Ibadan (UI) in 1973, earned MPhil and Ph. D degrees from the same University in 1976 and 1978 respectively, and passed through the University of Birmingham, England in 1978 for his Course Work in Geophysics.

Born on March, 22, 1945, the highly respected political leader has, among various other private and public sector roles, served as a Federal Commissioner representing Abia State at the Revenue Mobilization and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC (2010-2015); as National Treasurer, National Republican Convention, NRC (1990-1992), and as Secretary, Nigerian National Congress NNC (1988-1989).
