Paul Omukagu, Chairman of Organising Committee of the Clinton Thompson Football Competition in Bayelsa, on Monday in Yenagoa said 13 teams are participating in the competition.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition tagged “Clinton Thompson SWAN Cup” was for media houses in the state.

Omukagu told NAN after the opening game that some of the media houses participating are DAAR Communications, Radio Bayelsa, TV Continental (TVC), NTA and Radio Nigeria (Creek FM).

The rest include Silverbird, Royal FM, Government House Media, Correspondents Chapel, New Waves Newspaper and Ministry of Information Chapel.

Omukagu said the five-a-side competition was meant to revive the spirit of sportsmanship among journalists, as well as encourage sports development among the people.

“It is a novelty game for journalists and we want to create an avenue for physical and mental exercise in them in the course of discharging their duties,” he said.

NAN reports that the opening game, which was between Radio Bayelsa and TV Continental (TVC), saw the latter beating Radio Bayelsa 3-2.

Other matches slated for Monday are DAAR Communications vs Silverbird, Royal FM vs Government House Media, Correspondents Chapel vs BAFENPA and New Waves vs Information Chapel.

The competition, being organised by the Bayelsa chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), is in honour of the late Clinton Thompson.

He was a veteran reporter and pioneer SWAN Vice-President, South-South, and he died earlier this year.
