Former Governorship aspirant and founder of the defunct AKPF, Archbishop Sam Akpan, has defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with hundreds of his supporters.

A core grassroots politician, Archbishop Sam Akpan is returning to the PDP where he once served as State Deputy Chairman before his defection to APC in 2015 after losing the Governorship Primary election to incumbent Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel.

An excited Akwa Ibom State PDP chairman Rt. Hon. Aniekan Akpan, who received the Archbishop Akpan and his supporters assured them of speedy integration into the party ahead of the 2023 election.

His words “Our party, the PDP is formidable and vibrant, which is why Akwa Ibom people always trust us with their mandate. It is a thing of joy to have our former party men and women rejoin us to continue the work of producing great leaders like Governor Udom Emmanuel who has put our state on the map of development.

“As we have always said, the umbrella is big enough to accommodate everyone and our doors are always open to welcome back our friends into the fold. We are particularly excited that the likes of Archbishop Samuel Akpan, Dr Edet Attih and others who were key leaders in the opposition party, have returned to their political home where true democracy is practiced.”

In his remarks on behalf of the defectors, Archbishop Akpan announced that he is returning to the PDP together with leaders of the main opposition party, APC, from across the state.

Sam Akpan was full of praise for the achievements of the Udom Emmanuel-led Government in the state and the open arms which have welcomed them back into the party. He pledged unwavering support and loyalty to the PDP and Governor Udom Emmanuel.
