There has been jubilation as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday declared Gov. Ademola Adeleke of Accord Party the winner of Saturday’s Osun governorship election.

The Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, declared Adeleke the winner after polling a total of 511,067 votes.

Ogunwole stated that a total of 1,005,800 votes were cast during the election, with 985,079 being valid votes and 20,721 being rejected votes.

He said out of the valid votes, Accord party scored the highest number of votes.

“I, Professor Joshua Ogunwole, hereby certify that I am the returning officer for the 2026 Osun governorship election held on Aug. 15, and declare that Ademola Jackson Adeleke of the Accord Party, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner,” Ogunwole said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adeleke scored 511,067 votes to defeat his closest rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who garnered 444,815 votes.

The candidate of African Democratic Congress (ADC), Najeem Salaam, came a distant third with 17,180 votes.

Adeleke, in total, won in 19 local government areas while Oyebamiji won in 11 local government areas.

He is expected to be sworn in for another four-year term on Nov. 27.

Reacting to the INEC declaration, Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, in a post on his verified X handle on Sunday, wrote: “WE DID IT UNC !!!” tagging Adeleke’s official X account.

He also shared a video alongside the message, showing him lying on the floor while celebrating the electoral victory with Nigerian flag emojis.

The singer had actively campaigned for Adeleke during the electioneering period and expressed support for his uncle through several social media posts.

Adeleke, who first became governor after winning the 2022 Osun governorship election, secured a second term with his victory in the 2026 poll.

The streets of Ede North and Ede South were on Sunday thrown into jubilation as residents commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting a credible and peaceful governorship election in Osun.

The residents, who spoke in interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said the electoral process was generally orderly and transparent in spite of some political violence recorded.

NAN reports that Ede environs witnessed people dancing and jubilating after the electoral umpire disclosed Adeleke as winner of the election keenly contested by his rival, Mr. Oyebamiji, of the APC.

Streets across Ede recorded motorcycles and vehicles with people dancing and singing songs of joy and happiness.

They also charged the electoral umpire to ensure that lapses recorded in the just concluded Governorship election were addressed before the presidential poll.

A Civil Servant, Mrs Toyin Odewusi, said that all efforts to truncate the electoral process were defeated and thanked God for making it possible for Adeleke to emerge victorious.

Odewusi charged the governor not to disappoint the masses that have turned out to cast their votes and support his re-election.

She urged supporters of the opposition parties to support the good work of the governor rather than staying aloof and making things more complex for him.

According to her, we civil servants are happy because what the governor did for us cannot be overemphasized.

A business owner at Irewumi community in Ede, Mr Thomas Babatunde, told NAN that the victory recorded by the governor was a result of his administration’s commitment to excellence.

Babatunde said the developmental projects recorded in the state was overwhelming and such victory was premised on what the ordinary masses have seen and heard.

He called on the governor not to disappoint the voters who sacrificed their lives towards ensuring that he was re-elected.

Also, Ms Kabirat Abdulquadri, a resident at Odomburo, said the large turnout of voters across various polling units was an indication of the people’s interest in the electoral process and their determination to exercise their civic responsibility.

Abdulquadri noted that the presence of security personnel at the polling units also contributed to the peaceful conduct of the election.

She also hailed INEC for uploading electoral results successfully in spite of a little delay which indicates that the umpire has improved and also built electorate confidence in the system.

Mrs Funmi Alabi , a resident at Odomburo Oloba community of Owode -Ede, also commended INEC for the victory, adding that the governor had done credibly well in the last four years and deserved another tenure.

Alabi called on political parties, candidates and their supporters to accept the outcome of the election and avoid actions capable of disrupting the peace of the state.

Jubilation also erupted in Ile-Ife following the declaration of Gov. Ademola Adeleke as winner of the election.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) observed the jubilation on Sunday in Ile-Ife, where residents celebrated the governor’s victory and expressed satisfaction over the peaceful conduct of the polls.

Speaking with NAN, Osun Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Olusesan Oyedele, thanked God for the peaceful conduct of the election, without killings or destruction of property across the state.

Oyedele described the election as free, fair and credible, commending INEC officials for conducting the exercise without bias and ensuring a transparent electoral process across Osun.

He also commended the electorate for their orderliness and urged them to remain law-abiding, saying peaceful participation was essential to sustaining democracy and development across the state.

Also, Mrs Busayo Arayela, an Accord Party leader, acknowledged God’s grace for allowing peace to prevail in Osun before and during the election, expressing hope that it will continue.

Arayela said party members and leaders were enthusiastic about the peaceful manner the electorate conducted themselves throughout the electoral exercise, describing the development as encouraging for democracy.

She said the efforts of traditional rulers, particularly Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, in advocating peace and urging residents to “give peace a chance” could not be overemphasised.

The party leader appreciated God for preventing evil occurrences in Ife North, Ife East, Ife South and Ife Central, as well as other parts of Osun during election.

Arayela appealed to residents and stakeholders to maintain peace across the state after the declaration of the result, urging everyone to accept the outcome responsibly and peacefully thereafter.

She also admonished Adeleke to sustain his developmental programmes across Osun, urging him not to disappoint residents but ensure delivery of democratic dividends to communities across the state.

There was also jubilation in Osogbo following the declaration of Adeleke as the winner.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that immediately after the final results were announced, supporters and residents of the town trooped out in large numbers to celebrate the victory.

Supporters of the governor, who had gathered at the INEC office as early as 5.00a.m., danced at the commission’s main entrance shortly after the declaration.

Many of the supporters and residents were seen riding motorcycles and driving around the town, singing victory songs and celebrating the outcome of the election.
