Sen. Godiya Akwashiki (SDP/Nasarawa North) has died at the age of 52, following a protracted illness in an Indian hospital on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025.
A family source, who confirmed the incident to  the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on condition of anonymity on Thursday in Nassarawa Eggon, said that the death of the senator was a big blow and had left a big vacuum given his commitment to  development of the senatorial zone and empowerment programmes.
“Since the history of Nasarawa North, Sen. Akwashiki has been the best Senator Nasarawa North ever produced due to his purposeful leadership.
“His projects are in every nook and cranny of the constituency as he was the only Senator that re-contested and won for second term in the zone,” he said
NAN recalls that before his election into the Nigerian senate in 2019,  Akwashiki had served as  Majority Leader and Deputy Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly.
NAN also learnt that Akwashiki was born  on Aug.3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon, Nasarawa State.

Reacting to his demise, the Deputy President of the Senate, Sen. Jibrin Barau, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Malam Ismail Mudashir, extolled the virtues of the late lawmaker, describing him as a lawmaker of exceptional calibre.

Akwashiki was first elected to the Senate in 2019 and re-elected in 2023.

Barau, who is also the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, said that the late senator, throughout his sojourn in the Senate, exhibited a high sense of patriotism and commitment to the Nigerian project through his various contributions in and outside the Senate.

“Akwashiki was a parliamentarian par excellence who worked hard to enhance the standard of living of the people of Nasarawa North Senatorial district and beyond.

“My thoughts and prayers are with his immediate family, the entire people of Nasarawa North Senatorial District and Nasarawa State in general.

“May God grant them the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” he said.
