The United States secured their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 with a convincing 2-0 victory over Australia at Lumen Field in Seattle on Friday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side made it two wins from two matches in the tournament despite being without injured captain Christian Pulisic, who missed the game with a calf problem.

The Americans made a bright start and took the lead in the 11th minute. Forward Folarin Balogun’s pace and pressure caused problems for the Australian defence, leading to an own goal by Cameron Burgess.

The USA dominated possession for most of the first half and continued to create chances. Their pressure paid off again just before the break when Alex Freeman found the net in the 44th minute. The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but a VAR review overturned the decision and confirmed the defender’s strike.

Australia improved after half-time and enjoyed more possession as they searched for a way back into the contest. However, the American defence remained organised and disciplined, with Chris Richards and Tim Ream standing firm at the back.

Goalkeeper Matt Freese was rarely tested as the USA comfortably managed the game and denied Australia any clear scoring opportunities.

Freeman was one of the standout performers, producing another impressive display and capping it with his first World Cup goal. Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie also played key roles in midfield, helping the Americans control important periods of the match.

The victory guarantees the United States a place in the knockout stages with one group match still to play. Pochettino’s men will now turn their attention to their final Group D fixture against Turkey on June 25 in California.

With six points from their opening two matches, the USA continue to build momentum and confidence as they chase a deep run on home soil.
