Shepherd Academy Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Friday emerged winners of the National Bible Quiz competition for Senior Secondary School Students.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Academy came first out of seven schools drawn from across the country in a keenly contested competition organised by the Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN).
In his address of welcome, Pastor Samuel Sanusi, General Secretary (GS)/ Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the society thanked parents and teachers of the contestants for offering their children to participate in the competition.
Sanusi said that the goal of the competition was to encourage youth and students engagement with the Bible.
He said that the society had been fostering Bible engagement for the past 18 years and called on well meaning Nigerians and Churches to come onboard to make the competition richer, bigger and better.
“BSN’ work of translating. Publishing and distribution of the Bible would be an effort in futility without making people to engage with the Bible.
” We observe that people have the Bible but they don’t read it. They rely on what their Pastors teach them in their various Churches.
” I am happy to see the Command Secondary School for the first time,” Sanusi said.
The CEO expressed gratitude to the Principal of Igbobi College, Yaba for hosting the competition and also for the role played by his students.
In his keynote address, Pastor Victor Oluwadamilare urged the students to look up to Jesus for peace and guardians in life.
Represented by his wife, Pastor (Mrs.) Abosede Oluwadamilare, he counselled the students to eschew all forms of violence and embrace the peace and wellness that could only come from God.
Highlight of the event was the presentation of gifts to the participants.
NAN reports that the contestants from Shephard Academy Port Harcourt, Masters Cookey Favour and Mathias Rehoboth expressed gratitude to God, their parents and teachers for giving them the opportunity to participate in the quiz.
