Nigeria will begin the defence of their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title when they face debutants Malawi at the Al Medina Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday night.
The Super Falcons are the reigning African champions after coming from behind to beat hosts Morocco 3-2 in last year’s final to lift the trophy.
Nigeria will be aiming for a strong start, but head coach, Justine Madugu, has warned that his team will not underestimate Malawi, who are making their first appearance at the tournament.
Speaking at Monday’s pre-match press conference, Madugu said every team at the competition deserves respect.
“We have huge respect for all our opponents. Every team that qualified for this tournament deserves respect. Malawi may be making their debut, but they are a very good side. We will not take anything for granted.
“We are here to defend our title. The team is ready, focused and determined. We will stick to our game plan and our mission,” Madugu said.
Malawi will look to cause an upset with star sisters Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga leading their attack. The Scorchers also have experienced players across defence, midfield and attack who could trouble the Super Falcons.
Nigeria are expected to be led by Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, while goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defenders Osinachi Ohale, Michelle Alozie, Rofiat Imuran and Tosin Demehin, midfielders Deborah Abiodun and Halimatu Ayinde, and forwards Esther Okoronkwo, Chinwendu Ihezuo and Asisat Oshoala could all start.
The Super Falcons also have a strong bench, with players such as Jennifer Echegini, Toni Payne, Gift Monday, Omorinsola Babajide and Folashade Ijamilusi available.
The Group B match will kick off at 9pm Nigeria time in Rabat.
