Prof. Babajide Afolabi, the Director, Computer Centre, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife in Osun, has decried the way Nigerian youths are using technology to perpetrate fraud.

Afolabi spoke at the inauguration of executive officers of the Nigerian Women in Information Technology (NIWIIT), Osun Chapter, on Wednesday in Ile-Ife.

He also spoke as a Guest Speaker in a lecture entitled: “Future of Information Technology”.

According to him, while some developing countries are maximising their Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for the growth and development of their citizenry, our youths are using it to perpetrate fraud.

He implored the three tiers of government to educate youths on the potential of social media.

“Failure to do this would continue to jeopardise their brighter future and affect the national economy.

“The efforts of technology cannot be over-emphasised in computerising every aspect of the society, and anyone without the knowledge of information technology cannot live a meaningful life,” he said.

Earlier, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), OAU, Prof. Olubola Babalola, said that the past leaders of the NIWIIT had made landmark contributions to the union and to the citadel of learning.

Babalola then urged members of the group to seize any opportunity given to grab whatever they could, adding that ICT was lucrative and ready to solve all challenges.

Also, the National President of NIWIIT, Mrs. Dele Bayo-Osibo, urged the new executive to embrace other women across the state, especially at the tertiary institutions to ensure that the union continues to progress.

Bayo-Osibo appealed to all members to support the new leaders, work together and do their best to impact the lives of girls and women at large.

Also, Dr Olufunmilayo Banjo, Director, Centre for Gender and Social Policy Studies (CGSPS), OAU, Ile-Ife, who spoke as Chairman of the occasion, urged the new leaders to ensure transparency and be diligent in their new positions.

The New State Coordinator, Dr Olukemi Awoyelu, while delivering her address, commended her predecessor, Mrs. Yetunde Ogunwale, for the great work done to uplift the association.

Awoyelu assured the members of good services and solicited their cooperation to move the association to greater heights.
