Former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele released on bail; Surveillance sustained

The former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, was released on Friday night by the authorities of the Nigeria Correctional Service, FCT, Abuja command after fulfilling his bail conditions. However, security agencies are reportedly closely monitoring his movements.

Sources at the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) revealed that the federal government has instructed them to keep a watchful eye on Emefiele’s movements in and out of the country. More allegations have been leveled against him, and security forces are determined to prevent any attempt by him to leave the country unnoticed.

The spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) overseeing Kuje Correctional Centre, Adamu Sampson Duza, confirmed Emefiele’s release, stating that he has met his bail conditions. Duza said on Saturday, December 23, 2023: “I can confirm to you that he (Emefiele) has met his bail conditions, hence he has no reason to remain in our facility. The former CBN chief was granted bail of N300 million by a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja, where he faces prosecution for alleged procurement fraud.

Justice Hamza Muazu granted the bail with the condition that Emefiele must provide two sureties with certificates of occupancy and titles of properties within the Maitama District of Abuja.

Security sources in Abuja emphasized that Emefiele is under surveillance due to substantial allegations against him. Authorities are determined to ensure that he does not evade legal scrutiny or leave the country without proper oversight.
