New Jersey: Fire in Irvington damages neighborhood

By Isiah Christie

On the Newark-Irvington border, a massive fire broke out around 6PM on Saturday, June 21, 2025 that damaged many homes and captured the attention of locals as far as several miles away. The flames started at one of several rows of houses, occurring in the rear of the building and spreading rapidly to those adjacent. It was reported that two alarms went off and four buildings in total were affected.

While the source of the fire was not identified, the damage implies that it could have been an act of household negligence. While first responders arrived very quickly, it took them a significant amount of time to neutralize the blaze. They were still struggling to contain the fire as late as 6:50 P.M. It was finally subdued by the end of the evening, but the damage was massive, judging by videos of the incident.

Upon its occurrence, citizens rushed to social media platforms and news outlets to report their concerns with visuals of thick columns of smoke. Some claimed that they saw the thick black smoke as far as East Rutherford’s MetLife Stadium, which is a whopping thirteen miles from Irvington. Jersey City residents also noticed the damage from afar, and those at the nearby Newark Liberty International Airport also had a crisp visual.

Regardless of the fire’s source, the situation has raised awareness to the outdated conditions of townhouse structures. “A nasty fire indeed. Those old 3 deckers are a big fire hazard in many old cities. They were built to house all the immigrants entering the USA to work in the early 1900’s.”, u/USMC69 explained on YouTube. These homes are known for being susceptible to dangerous occurrences due to their old infrastructure and this issue is only prone to amplification in what is expected to be a historically hot summer for New Jersey.

Nobody had been reported as injured or dead as a result of the fire, at the time of filing this report.
