Ex-President Buhari dies in London; Tinubu sends Shettima, Gbajabiamila to UK for repatriation of remains

The family of former President Muhammadu Buhari has announced his death on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the former president died at a clinic in London, according to his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, and his former aide, Bashir Ahmad.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu who has equally announced the passing of his predecessor, according to a statement by his spokesman, Mr. Bayo Onanuga on Sunday in Abuja, has spoken with Hajiya Aisha Buhari, the former President’s widow, and offered his deep condolences.
Onanuga also said that the President has ordered Vice President Kashim Shettima and his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila to proceed to the UK to accompany Buhari’s body back to Nigeria.
Tinubu, Onanuga noted further, has also ordered flags to fly at half-mast as a mark of respect for the departed leader.
Buhari had been receiving medical treatment in London before his passing, having initially traveled for a routine medical check-up in April.
He was twice elected Nigeria’s President in 2015 and 2019 and also served as military head of state between January 1984 and August 1985.
Buhari was said to be 80 or 81 years old, although some sources reported him as 82.
His funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in accordance with Islamic rites
