Super Falcons head coach, Justin Madugu, has promised to improve his team’s attacking performance after Nigeria struggled to score goals during the group stage of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Nigeria began their campaign with a 3-0 win over Tunisia and followed that up with a narrow 1-0 victory against Botswana, thanks to a late 89th-minute goal from Chiwendu Ihezuo. However, the team’s inability to convert chances became clear in their final group game against Algeria, where they had 24 shots on goal but failed to score.
After the goalless draw against Algeria at Stade Larbi Zouli in Casablanca, Coach Madugu apologised to fans for the team’s below-par display and admitted that the lack of goals is a growing concern.
“Before this tournament, we played a number of matches and scored freely,” the 61-year-old coach said in an interview with journalist Biola Solace-Chukwu.
“But now, scoring has become a challenge. We need to break things down and do a lot of work.”
Madugu added that there is little time before their next game, but he remains committed to fixing the problem.
“The same players who used to score goals are still the ones playing now. So, we have to find out why they are struggling and work on it quickly,” he said.
The Super Falcons are now preparing to face Zambia in their next match, which will take place in three days at the same Stade Larbi Zouli in Casablanca, Morocco. Kick-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm West African Time (WAT).
