Man confesses to killing nurse, baby in Abuja School, blames accomplice
A man named David Moses has confessed to killing a school nurse and a 14-month-old child at a school in the Dawaki area of Abuja. He claimed he was pressured by his friend and alleged accomplice, Sunday Irimiya, who is currently on the run.
Moses, who worked as a security guard at Clear Hope Foundation Academy, made the confession on Friday while being questioned at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command.
According to him, the original plan was to kidnap the nurse and the baby for ransom. They first demanded ₦250 million, but later reduced it to ₦3 million, which was collected.
“What brought me here is that I killed a child with a nurse in Clear Hope School on July 23. Me and my friend demanded ₦250 million ransom. Later, we settled for ₦3 million, which we collected,” Moses said.
He explained that things went wrong after the ransom was collected. A disagreement between him and Sunday led to Sunday stabbing him and fleeing with the money.
“After my friend stabbed me, I went to someone’s house and told them part of the story. I later insisted on seeing the police so I could explain everything. The police took me to hospital, and after treatment, I told them the full story,” he added.
Moses said Sunday hid in a toilet while he lured the nurse out of her class under the excuse of checking something. As they approached the toilet, Sunday came out and strangled her with a rope.
“She struggled, but he kept tightening the rope until she became weak,” Moses recalled.
After killing the nurse, Moses said Sunday insisted they also kill the child.
“I said no, but he said if we didn’t bring the baby, the ransom wouldn’t be enough. So I brought the baby, and we killed the baby too,” he confessed.
When asked if he had done such a thing before, Moses said this was his first time and claimed Sunday forced him into it.
He also revealed that the nurse had shown him kindness before her death.
“That day, she gave me ₦300 to buy food. She had been helping me before then,” he said.
FCT Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, said the incident happened on July 23, 2025, and the victims — Mrs. Chinyere Anaene, a 55-year-old school nurse, and Nanenter Asher Yese, a 14-month-old child — were declared missing the same day.
“Later that day, the husband of the nurse received a call demanding ₦250 million for their release. Though the victims had already been killed, the suspects still demanded ₦3 million pretending they were alive,” the CP said.
The police later arrested Moses, who confessed to the crime. His accomplice, Sunday, is still being sought.
As part of the investigation, the police also arrested the school principal, two other security guards, and the Chief Security Officer of the private security company that employed Moses.
Zachariah Fiyinfoluwa, who represents the private security firm, said the company only learnt about the disappearance after the school principal raised an alarm. He admitted that the company failed to properly document Moses’ employment.
“We accept it was our fault for not keeping proper records,” he said, also confirming that supervisors were expected to visit posts like the school, but he did not say if that was done at Clear Hope School.
Police have promised to continue the investigation until all those involved are brought to justice.
