U.S. pledges $32.5m food aid for victims of conflict in Nigeria

The United States Government has announced $32.5 million in food assistance for people displaced by conflict in Nigeria.

In a statement released on its official X handle on Wednesday, September 3, the U.S. said the support will be channelled through the World Food Programme (WFP) to provide food and nutrition assistance to internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the North East and North West regions.

According to the statement, at least 764,205 people are expected to benefit from the donation. These include 41,569 pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls, as well as 43,235 children, who will receive complementary nutrition support through electronic food vouchers.

“The World Food Programme Nigeria, with U.S. Government’s contribution of $32.5 million, will provide food assistance and nutrition support to internally displaced persons across conflict-affected areas,” the statement read.

The initiative comes as Nigeria continues to grapple with insecurity and humanitarian challenges, particularly in communities affected by insurgency and banditry.
