Confusion as court stops PDP’s 2025 National Convention in Ibadan

The Federal High Court in Abuja has stopped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from going ahead with its 2025 National Convention scheduled to take place in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The convention was planned for 15 and 16 November and was expected to produce new national officers for the party. However, Justice Peter Odo Lifu, in a judgment delivered on Friday afternoon, ordered that the event must not hold until the party complies with its constitution and guidelines.

The ruling followed a suit filed by former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, who complained that he was not allowed to buy a nomination form to contest for the position of National Chairman.

Justice Lifu ruled that the PDP must allow Lamido to purchase the form before any convention can take place. He also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to supervise or monitor the convention until the party gives Lamido the opportunity to take part.

The judge stated that the PDP is bound to follow its own rules and must give equal opportunities to all eligible members. He added that the party acted wrongly by denying Lamido the chance to contest for the top position.
