Kano govt rejects Galadima’s claims of crackdown on opposition
The Kano State Government has rejected allegations made by a political activist and former National Secretary of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Buba Galadima, that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the Department of State Services (DSS), are working to silence opposition politicians in the state, describing the accusations as untrue and politically motivated.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said the state government strongly disagreed with Galadima stressing that the allegations were baseless and aimed at damaging the governor’s reputation.
Waiya added that the claims were designed to create division and tension within the state.
According to the commissioner, the accusations surfaced shortly after Governor Yusuf defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), noting further that Galadima’s comments came after he was removed as Chairman of the Board of Kano State Polytechnic.
Waiya explained that the decision to remove Galadima was based strictly on administrative reasons, including performance and competence, and not because of political differences.
The commissioner further dismissed suggestions that the state government was using security agencies to intimidate political opponents. He stressed that federal security institutions operate independently and in line with the law.
He said while the government welcomes constructive criticism, it will not tolerate the spread of false information that could threaten public peace, warning that freedom of expression should not be used as a tool for defamation or incitement.
He maintained that opposition members continue to carry out their activities freely in Kano and that media operations remain unhindered.
Waiya reaffirmed the government’s commitment to democracy, the rule of law and peaceful coexistence, adding that the administration would continue to support security agencies in maintaining order while respecting the rights and dignity of citizens.
