A member of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Ovat Dickson Agbor, has issued a public apology following a controversy surrounding an incident in which he allegedly manhandled his wife.
Agbor, who represents Obubra 1 State Constituency, released a statement expressing regret over the incident and the public reaction it generated.
In the statement, the lawmaker apologised to the government and people of Cross River State for the embarrassment the situation may have caused.
“I wish to sincerely express my profound apology to the Government and good people of Cross River State over the recent controversy that has generated public concern,” he said.
He also extended his apology to the state governor, Bassey Otu, and the First Lady, Eyoanwan Bassey Otu.
“First, I respectfully extend my heartfelt apology to His Excellency, Governor Bassey Otu, and the First Lady for any embarrassment the situation may have caused the government and the image of our dear state,” Agbor stated.
The lawmaker further apologised to the leadership of the Assembly under the Speaker, Elvert Ayambem, and his fellow lawmakers.
“I also tender my sincere apologies to the leadership of the Cross River State House of Assembly and my esteemed colleagues for the discomfort and distraction this development may have created within the House,” he said.
Agbor also apologised to the people of Obubra Local Government Area, traditional rulers and political stakeholders for the concern the matter may have caused.
“My sincere apology also goes to the entire people of Obubra Local Government Area, our respected traditional rulers, political leaders and stakeholders who have always shown me support,” he added.
He also expressed regret to members of the All Progressives Congress in the state, especially the party’s Obubra chapter.
“My sincere apology also goes to my political family, the All Progressives Congress in Cross River State and particularly the APC Obubra Chapter, for any negative attention this situation may have drawn to our great party,” he said.
The lawmaker equally apologised to his wife’s family and his own relatives for the emotional stress caused by the incident.
While reacting to reports circulating online, Agbor said many of the narratives did not reflect the true situation but admitted that he should have spoken earlier.
“While many narratives circulating online do not accurately reflect the true situation, I take full responsibility for not coming out earlier to address the issue publicly. I acknowledge that my silence created room for speculation, and for that I am deeply sorry,” he said.
Agbor added that he remains committed to serving his constituents with humility and renewed dedication.
“I remain committed to serving my constituents with humility, responsibility and renewed dedication,” he added.
