Abuja hosts 3rd National Para Sports Festival; Athletes from across Nigeria converge

The third edition of the National Para Sports Festival has officially kicked off in Abuja, with athletes from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory taking part.

Organisers describe the event as a major celebration of resilience, inclusion and sporting excellence, as para-athletes compete in 15 different disciplines. These include para athletics, wheelchair basketball, para powerlifting, sitting volleyball, amputee football and para swimming, among others.

Officials noted that the rising number of participants shows the growing recognition of para-athletes and their contributions to Nigeria’s success on the international stage. Many of the competitors have represented the country in global events, highlighting the need for continued support and development.

Beyond competition, the festival is also seen as a strong message on inclusion, with stakeholders calling for better opportunities for persons living with disabilities. They stressed the need for improved facilities, funding and grassroots programmes to support the growth of para-sports in the country.

The event, created to provide a structured platform for athletes with disabilities, has become an important pathway for discovering talents who go on to represent Nigeria at major competitions.

However, despite its progress, concerns remain over limited funding, poor infrastructure and low media attention, with stakeholders urging more commitment to the development of para-sports nationwide.
