Senegal defy CAF; Parade AFCON trophy despite title controversy

Senegal paraded the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy before their friendly match against Peru at the Stade de France on Saturday, despite losing the title earlier this month via a Confederation of African Football (CAF) pronouncement.

Morocco were declared winners of the 2025 AFCON tournament after the CAF overturned the result of the final played in January.

During that match, Senegal players walked off the pitch in protest after Morocco were given a stoppage-time penalty with the score at 0-0. After a delay of about 17 minutes, play resumed, Morocco missed the penalty, and Senegal went on to score the winning goal in extra time.

However, following an appeal by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, CAF ruled that Senegal had forfeited the match and awarded Morocco a 3-0 win.

Senegal have now taken the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which has promised to give a decision as soon as possible.

Before facing Peru, captain Kalidou Koulibaly led his team-mates onto the pitch with the AFCON trophy for a lap of honour. Koulibaly and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy later placed the trophy in the presidential box.

Senegal also wore a kit with two stars above their badge, showing their 2021 title and the disputed 2025 crown.

On the pitch, Senegal defeated Peru 2-0 thanks to goals from Nicolas Jackson and Ismaila Sarr.

The match in Paris was Senegal’s first since the AFCON final and is part of their build-up to the upcoming World Cup in June, where they will face France, Norway, and either Bolivia or Iraq in the group stage.
