NUJ issues final warning against unauthorized media groups in Akwa Ibom

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, has raised concern over the “rapid proliferation of unauthorized media splinter groups” in the state, issuing a final warning to its members.

In a press release, the Union reminded members and the public of its “long-standing resolution… which categorically bans, condemns, rejects, and disassociates itself from these unregulated and unprofessional formations.” It recalled that at a State Executive Committee meeting on September 29, 2020, “automatic sanction was pronounced on members found to aid, belong to or identify with these groups.”

The Council also cited the decision of the National Executive Council meeting held in Kano in September 2025 under National President Alhassan Yahya, which “reaffirmed and reinforced the ban on members’ involvement in any unauthorized media groupings.”

The NUJ warned that “members who are in these splinter groups should quit immediately as the Union will not hesitate to act decisively,” adding that anyone found involved “shall without recourse to any debate face the weight of the law, through a firm disciplinary action.”

The Union also urged the public and organisations to “desist from engaging in or transacting with such unregulated groups,” stressing that only the NUJ platform guarantees “professionalism, ethical journalism, and credible reportage anchored on globally accepted standards.”
