The United States began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in spectacular fashion, producing a dominant 4–1 victory over Paraguay at SoFi Stadium on Friday night.
In front of a packed home crowd, the Americans delivered a confident and clinical display, with Folarin Balogun scoring twice to lead a convincing win that immediately raised hopes of a strong tournament run.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side started brightly and took an early lead through a fortunate opener after sustained pressure inside Paraguay’s half. The breakthrough settled the hosts, who quickly took full control of the game with sharp passing and aggressive movements in attack.
Balogun soon took centre stage. The striker’s pace and positioning constantly stretched the Paraguayan defence, and although he had an early effort ruled out for offside, he made no mistake when the next chance arrived. Meeting a well-delivered cross inside the box, he finished calmly to double the lead for the United States.
The 24-year-old struck again before half-time, capping off a devastating first-half performance from the hosts. His second goal, a composed finish from close range, ensured the United States went into the break with a commanding 3–0 advantage.
Paraguay struggled to contain the tempo and intensity of the American attack throughout the first half, with their defensive structure repeatedly broken down by quick combinations between midfield and forward players.
After the restart, the United States managed the game with maturity, controlling possession and limiting Paraguay’s attacking threat. The visitors did manage to pull one goal back in the second half through a well-taken effort from inside the box, briefly testing the home side’s focus.
However, the United States quickly restored control and continued to create chances. Their superiority was confirmed late on when Gio Reyna added a fourth goal in the closing moments, producing a fine finish to seal a statement victory.
Balogun’s brace highlighted his growing importance to the team, while the overall performance reflected a well-balanced and organised side capable of both attacking fluency and game management.
The United States will now turn their attention to their next Group D fixture against Australia, with momentum firmly on their side after an emphatic opening-night performance.
