Nigeria’s Super Eagles have advanced to the final of the 2026 Unity Cup following a comfortable 2-0 win over Zimbabwe on Tuesday evening in London.
The encounter at The Valley Stadium saw Femi Azeez steal the spotlight as the Millwall winger scored twice on his debut to guide the three-time African champions to victory.
Head coach Eric Chelle enjoyed a positive start in the tournament as his side controlled most parts of the game against the Warriors.
The Super Eagles got off to a flying start when Azeez opened the scoring in the fifth minute with an excellent effort from outside the box after Nigeria began the match strongly.
The goal settled the Nigerian side, with captain Terem Moffi leading the attack effectively while Tochukwu Nnadi and Samson Tijani impressed in midfield.
Zimbabwe tried to respond after conceding early, but the Nigerian defence, marshalled by Igoh Ogbu and Chibuike Nwaiwu, remained solid and organised throughout the first half.
Nigeria created more opportunities before the break but had to settle for a slim one-goal advantage at halftime.
The Super Eagles continued their dominance in the second half and eventually doubled their lead in the 63rd minute. Moffi made a dangerous run into the penalty area before setting up Azeez, who calmly finished to grab his second goal of the night.
The brace completed a memorable debut outing for the 24-year-old winger, who recently enjoyed an impressive campaign with Millwall in the English Championship, recording 17 goal contributions and earning a place in the league’s Team of the Season.
Chelle later introduced Tosin Oyedokun and Owen Oseni in place of Philip Otele and Samson Tijani as Nigeria comfortably saw out the game.
Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo also impressed whenever called upon, helping the Super Eagles keep a clean sheet against a Zimbabwe side that had previously drawn twice with Nigeria during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The victory sends Nigeria into the final of the Unity Cup, where they will face the winner of the other semi-final between Jamaica and India.
For Chelle, the performance offers another positive sign as he continues to assess new players and build squad depth ahead of future competitive matches.
Still, the biggest story of the night was Azeez, whose brilliant debut performance has quickly made him one of the standout names from Nigeria’s latest outing.
