Super Falcons striker Asisat Oshoala sent a strong message to Nigerians after scoring in her team’s 2-1 victory over Senegal in an international friendly match in Ikenne-Remo on Friday.
Oshoala opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 32nd minute, calmly converting a penalty as the Super Falcons began their preparations for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
However, it was her goal celebration that attracted attention.
After finding the net, the experienced forward raised her hand to reveal a message written on her wrist tape. The message read: “Save the teachers. Bring back our children.”
The message was aimed at drawing attention to the recent school abduction incident in Oyo State, where dozens of pupils and several teachers were reportedly kidnapped by armed attackers. The incident became even more tragic after one of the abducted teachers reportedly lost their life.
Oshoala’s gesture quickly gained attention on social media, with many praising the former African Women’s Footballer of the Year for using her platform to speak out on an important national issue.
On the pitch, the striker also made a successful return to the Super Falcons, marking her first appearance since the 2024 WAFCON final with a goal.
Nigeria doubled their lead before half-time through Toni Payne, who finished off a well-worked team move to make it 2-0.
The Super Falcons controlled most of the match and limited Senegal’s attacking opportunities. Although the visitors scored a late goal in the 86th minute, Nigeria held on to secure the victory.
The match was the first-ever meeting between the Super Falcons and Senegal’s Teranga Lionesses. Both teams are using the friendly matches to prepare for the WAFCON tournament in Morocco.
The two countries will meet again in another friendly match at the same venue on Monday, June 8, as head coach Justine Madugu continues to fine-tune his squad ahead of the continental championship.
