2026 FIFA World Cup: Morocco earn valuable point against Brazil

Morocco produced a disciplined performance to hold Brazil to a 1-1 draw in their opening Group C match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Saturday.

The Atlas Lions shocked the five-time world champions in the 21st minute when Ismael Saibari calmly chipped the ball over goalkeeper Alisson after being picked out by a perfectly weighted pass from Brahim Diaz.

Morocco’s lead lasted only until Brazil found their rhythm. Vinicius Junior brought the South Americans level with a superb finish, ensuring both teams went into the break with the score tied at 1-1.

The second half was a closely contested affair, with both sides pressing hard but struggling to create clear-cut chances. Morocco remained organised at the back, while Brazil enjoyed more possession without finding a breakthrough.

Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou played a key role for Morocco in the closing stages. The experienced shot-stopper dealt confidently with several dangerous corners and produced an important save from Danilo Santos as Brazil pushed for a late winner.

Morocco’s young midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi also impressed with a mature display against Brazil’s experienced midfield, while defender Noussair Mazraoui was outstanding throughout the match.

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti made several substitutions in an attempt to change the game, introducing Matheus Cunha, Luiz Henrique and Danilo Santos, but Morocco’s defence stood firm.

After more than 10 minutes of added time, neither side could find a winning goal as the match ended in a draw.

The result gives both teams one point in Group C, which also includes Scotland and Haiti. Morocco will be pleased with their performance against one of the tournament favourites, while Brazil will know they need to improve in their remaining group matches.
