Peter Obi, Obasanjo, others celebrate Igwe Achebe, Chief Yomi Edu


Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, has celebrated two of the country’s prominent personalities – His Royal Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe (Agbogidi), the Obi of Onitsha, and Chief Yomi Edu, a former Minister – who marked their birthdays over the weekend.
Mr. Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, in an X post titled “Happy birthday to illustrious and distinguished Nigerians,” said the lives of the two celebrants “continue to reflect service, leadership, and nation-building.”
He said that Igwe Achebe CFR, who is also Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, who marked his 85th birthday, “is a respected symbol of cultural heritage, enterprise, and traditional leadership.”
Obi, the presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, noted that he worked closely with Igwe Achebe in his eight years as Governor, “where he showed a passion for good governance. His life and reign continue to represent dignity, continuity, and the preservation of our rich cultural identity.”
The NDC presidential candidate also pad glowing tribute to Chief Edu, who turned 80, noting that “his years of public service and contributions to the corporate world and national development were duly honoured by family, friends, and well-wishers.”
The two different occasions of the celebration of the two leaders was graced by eminent personalities, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of Ghana, Akufo-Addo, the Governor of Lagos State, Jide Sanwo-Olu, captains of industry, former governors, and other distinguished guests from across Nigeria and Africa at large.
The gatherings, Obi stressed, reflected deep respect across political, cultural, and generational lines.
He said that “Moments like this remind us of the value of longevity, service, and the importance of celebrating those who have contributed in various ways to the growth of our nation and continent.
“We continue to pray that God grants them good health, strength, and many more fruitful years ahead. -PO.”
