Trump praises Tinubu’s fight against terrorism, reveals US military support for Nigeria
United States President Donald Trump has praised President Bola Tinubu for his efforts to tackle terrorism and insecurity in Nigeria, especially attacks on Christian communities.
In a letter dated July 6, 2026, Trump commended Tinubu’s leadership and pledged continued support for Nigeria’s fight against terrorism. The letter was made public on Wednesday in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Trump also revealed that the United States had deployed Special Operations Forces, including the elite Navy SEAL Team 6, to train and support the Nigerian Armed Forces.
He described the security partnership between both countries as historic and said it would help strengthen Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.
In the letter, Trump thanked Tinubu for his message and praised his determination to protect Nigerians.
He said, “I appreciate your decisive leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people. I applaud your resolve to tackle the issues affecting your nation, especially the violence against Christian communities.”
The US President added that both countries share the same goal of defeating terrorism and said the 2026 US-Nigeria Defence Cooperation Roadmap provides a strong framework for closer security cooperation.
Trump said the American forces would help equip Nigerian troops with the skills, tools and intelligence needed to protect the country and keep its citizens safe.
He also expressed his commitment to working closely with President Tinubu throughout his time in office to strengthen relations between the two countries.
