The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has felicitated the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Andy Burnham, on his election and assumption of office.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu disclosed this in a statement issued by Kimiebi Ebienfa, Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Wednesday in Abuja.
The minister said that Nigeria and the United Kingdom shared deep historical ties, robust people-to-people connections, and a strong partnership cutting across trade, investment, security, education, and cultural exchange.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu said, “As Commonwealth nations, we remain committed to advancing our bilateral relations, promoting mutual prosperity, and collaborating on global issues, such as climate change, sustainable development, peace and security in Africa, and multilateral reforms.
“The Government and people of Nigeria look forward to working closely with Burnham and his administration to deepen this strategic partnership, build on existing cooperation, and explore new avenues for collaboration that will deliver tangible benefits to both nations.”
She also lauded the smooth and orderly democratic transition in the United Kingdom, saying the British people and institutions have enduring commitment to constitutional democracy.
According to her, Burnham’s leadership comes at a pivotal time.
“We are confident that his vision for economic renewal, decentralisation of power, and tackling  cost-of-living challenges will strengthen the United Kingdom for the benefit of its citizens,” the minister added.
