Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, has called for “a thorough, transparent, and timely investigation” into the root cause of the Enugu Air aircraft “runway excursion” that took place in Benin, Edo State.
Mr. Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, made the call in an X post, while reacting to the mishap that involved 68 passengers and crew members on board, all of who disembarked safely without injuries or casualties recorded.
He charged relevant regulatory and investigative bodies – particularly the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), to conduct this investigation, stressing that lessons from the incident will help strengthen public confidence in the nation’s aviation sector and ensure that the country’s skies remain consistently safe.
Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, joined Nigerians in thanking God for the safety of the passengers and crew, commended the pilot, the flight crew and the airport emergency response teams for their swift and professional handling of the situation, insisting that “the safety of human lives must always remain our highest priority.”
While celebrating the prevention of what could have been a major tragedy, Obi noted that “the incident serves as a sober reminder of the critical need for strict adherence to aviation safety protocols, rigorous routine maintenance, and continuous infrastructure upgrades across our airports nationwide.”
He also prayed that God will continue to guide and protect all travellers across our nation.
