A handshake from Beijing  By Femi Adesina

At the joyful event

I went back to my roots on Friday, March 15, 2019. What took me to Ipetumodu, my hometown, in Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State? An ICT Hub, worth over ten million naira, donated to my alma mater, Origbo Community High School (OCHS), by the Chinese Embassy was being commissioned by the Chinese Ambassador, Dr Zhou Pingjian.
I left the school 39 years ago, and there were some of my schoolmates I had not seen since then. We met at the event, which attracted former students across generations. The school turns 60 this year.
The fully equipped ICT Hub is a global handshake between Beijing, China, and Origbo Community High School. So impressed was the Ambassador with the judicious use of the initial over N10 million grant, that he promised another N5 million for capacity development. Who says Ipetumodu will not become like Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangdong soon? Wait and see.
The commissioning was graced by chiefs and leaders of the town, old and current students of the school, teachers past and present, senior government officials, while the Osun Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Ige, led the battery of security personnel that ensured that everything went well. It was a most colourful event. A very veritable trans-Atlantic handshake.
Xiexie. That’s ‘thank you’ in Chinese. And that’s exactly what the old boys and girls of OCHS, indeed, all Ipetumodu indigenes, say.
