Nigeria has been dethroned as 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers Group A leaders by Guinea-Bissau following their win over Sao Tome and Principe.
Group A whipping boys Sao Tome and Principe hosted Guinea-Bissau in a Matchday five clash on Wednesday June 14, 2023.
Against the odds, the game was keenly contested as Sao Tome and Principe sized the visitors for a fair share of possession in a drab first half.
Belgium based Zinho Gano struck what was the winner in the 55th minute for Guinea-Bissau to secure maximum points, enough to dethrone group leaders Nigeria.
That victory took Baciro Cande tutored Guinea-Bissau to top-spot with 10 points one above Nigeria who now occupy second spot with 9 points.
Nigeria will have opportunity to reclaim top-spot when they file out against Sierra Leone on Sunday June 18 in a penultimate fixture of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
That game will be a must-win for Sierra Leone who occupy third place in group A with five points.
John Kiester and the Leone Stars will see their hopes of qualifying for the Ivory Coast 2023 AFCON crash if they fail to beat the Eagles who need a single point to seal qualification.
