Brothers and sisters, what does Saint Joseph say to us in the Gospel of Matthew 1:18–24? In this passage, Joseph faces a situation that upends all his hopes and dreams. He had envisioned a peaceful life with Mary, but suddenly his plans were shattered by news he could not fully understand. Yet, instead of giving in to confusion or resentment, Joseph listened. He paused. He made space for God to speak in the silence of his heart.
During Christmas time, it is natural for us to think about our own dreams; dreams longed for, dreams forgotten, or even dreams broken. Sometimes, life confronts us with circumstances we never expected, moments that disorient us and seem to tear apart what we had so carefully built. In those moments, Joseph shows us the way. He teaches us not to surrender to anger, fear, or isolation. No, these only close the heart. Instead, he invites us to stay open, to receive the unexpected, even the painful, with faith and patience.
We are called to welcome life’s surprises as gifts that may carry God’s hidden message. When we face crisis or confusion, we should not rush to decisions made in haste or emotion. Like Joseph, we can choose to reflect quietly, to pray, and to discern in the light of God’s mercy. Mercy is the compass that keeps us aligned with God’s will when everything else feels uncertain.
When someone lives through crisis with faith, without letting bitterness take root, but keeping their heart open to God; something miraculous happens. God enters that space. He transforms the very thing that seemed to break us into the seed of something new. He reshapes crisis into calling, sorrow into strength, endings into beginnings. God is an expert in turning crisis into dreams, in opening paths we never could have imagined.
So, brothers and sisters, when life surprises you, when you find yourself standing where you never planned to be, do not fear. Keep the door of your heart open. Trust that God’s plans are greater than your own. The way may not unfold as you expect, but it will lead you exactly where you are meant to be.
Believe in God’s power even when you cannot see His purpose, and trust in His love even when His ways are hidden. For every detour in faith becomes part of the road that leads us closer to Him.
Amen.
Peace be with you!
