Akwa United sign on new players to beef up team for new NPL season (See who is on board)

As part of its efforts to fortify Akwa United FC in preparation for the 2024/2025 Nigerian Premier League (NPL) season, the management of the club is currently working on securing the services of 14 players from top teams within and outside the country.

A source close to the management said Akwa has completed the signing of most of the 14 and those expected to join the team are Chigozie Alekwe and Paul Acquah, who are coming in from two clubs in Libya, including Anwar Al-Abyar for the later.

Those also being sought after to join the team are Chiamaka Madu from Rivers United, Ubong Williams from Katsina United FC.

Samuel Mathew is billed to join the Promise Keepers from Doma United FC, while Charles Etim is coming in from neighbouring FC ONE Rocket of Onna.

In providing replacement for goal keeper Badmus Nurudeen, the team has secured Darlington Ovunda, from Heartland of Owerri while the movement of Seidu Mutawakilu from Rivers United, was near conclusion.

Others are Godwin Wisdom from Bendel Insurance, Eric Ekpere from Plateau United and Agu from Giant Brillars.

Meanwhile, the team has relieved the services of 14 players, among whom are Ubong Friday and Sani Suleiman who have left the shores of the country to continue their careers in Slovakia and Bangladesh respectively.

The players whose contracts have expired and are exiting the Promise Keepers are Oshomo Tosin, Samuel Canda, Anthony Anioke, Salomon Chigoziem, Wisdom Ifiok and Etim Matthew.

Others in similar circumstance are Dare Ojo, Badmus Nurudeen, Anthony Chukwuebuka, Damilare Johnson, Michael Egbeta and Efa Efa.

A source close to the management of Akwa United, said Kufre Ebong has exited the team on mutual consent.

In an effort to assemble a formidable squad that will compete in the league and ensure its return to the continent, Akwa is in close contact with a top striker at Rivers United and a highly rated winger from Enyimba Int’l of Aba.

The Chairman of the Club, Elder Paul Bassey, was quoted to have said that the management of the team was determined to put the team in the right perspective to face the 2024/2025 NPL season.

He thanked the Commissioner for Youths Development and Sports, Sir Monday Ebong Uko for the efforts made to set Akwa United on the winning light.

Akwa United is expected to play its first match of the season against Lobi Stars of Makurdi on August 31.
