The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Prof. Florence Obi, Monday, approved the immediate relieve of the appointment of the Head of the Department (HoD) of Pharmacology, Dr. Sylvester Ohadoma, for alleged unethical practices bothering on extortion.
This is contained in a release signed by the Registrar of the institution, Mr. Gabriel Egbe, and made available to journalists in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.
Dr. Ohadoma, who is also the Coordinator of a course in the faculty, “Principles of Pharmacology 322,” is reported to have demanded and received the sum of N3, 200 each from students as “practical fees.”
Frowning at the sacked HoD’s “flouting of the institution’s directives which is against management’s policy on extortion,” Ugbe said, “Ohadoma is said to have extorted the same amount from students in the previous semesters, in addition to selling textbooks for as much as N12,000 each to students in flagrant contravention of management’s directive.”
The release also directed that “all official responsibilities hitherto handled by Dr. Ohadoma including teaching and supervision are to be re-assigned to other qualified lecturers in the department.”
It further barred the axed HoD from having any direct academic interface with students for one year, directing further that he “refund all unauthorized monies which he collected from students and provide evidence of such refund to the Vice Chancellor through the Director, SERVICOM within the next month.”
Ugbe in the release maintained that this will serve as a deterrent to others as management would not condone any unethical practice by staff.
The release similarly directed the Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences to ensure strict compliance with the directives.
